it's okay

Life moves along at its own speed and direction.  It maybe too slow for you and not going the way you want it to go. Tough.  Often we are just along for the ride.

Lots of people feel like Trump is the end of the world.  But it won't be. I'm pretty sure it can't be as bad as I imagine it's going to be.  And I suspect America will survive and come out stronger. Yea, just like people when things go south and you survive then you're usually stronger. Although perhaps it didn't get bad enough on his first term since I do not think things got bad enough they had to get better in that phrase "things may have to get worse before they can get better."

Global warming. It's not even close to being an existential threat. The earth and almost all of its inhabitants will still be here in a hundred years. We've way over rated the coming disaster but we have also way over estimated our ability to alter the status quo. The status quo is how it is because their are serious forces maintaining the status quo.  First, human nature as captured in our cultures is an incredible force that maintains the status quo to protect life as we know it. It is the way it is in most cases to perpetuate a way of life and vested interests.  For example, all of humanity is pretty well addicted to the good life provided by fossil fuels. That is probably not going to change despite all the promises from governments all over the world.

Does that mean I don't think storms will get worse and there won't be some suffering from the climate changes. Nope there will be some bad shit happening.  I just think it is hard to motive people to act now for pain in the future. We will deal with the pain when it comes.  And for prosperous economies like ours, the pain will be minimal.  And we don't care enough to worry about the poor for whom the future will be very painful. That's just the way it is.

So my conclusion is that life will continue to plug along until some catastrophic event occurs for which we are unprepared and even unable to prepare for -- like a car wreck or a nuclear war.  In the meanwhile we can argue about what we should and should not do over climate change. But let's face it is too big and too complicated of a problem for even engineers and scientists and even more so for the public and politicians. It is a problem that requires sacrifice and coordination, not something humanity knows how to do until the hammer falls and it's too late.  Is that gloomy enough for you?
